Road Trip Recap: Founders Grove & Eureka

Wednesday, July 18th
We got up on day 3 and made ourselves some instant coffee and bagels.
We also made friends with a local Chipmunk who Julie named Bradley.
He was a show off and danced around the table.
But we didn't feed the wildlife.

We decided to head into Eureka.
Our goal was to eat Seafood and find Charcoal for a better fire.
We decided to take the scenic route for the first little bit.
We drove the whole Avenue of the Giants, and found Founders Grove.

It's so pretty there, and the floor is soft and spongy.
We got to climb inside all kinds of trees.

I even took some pictures looking up, just because it's too dark to see.

Then we kind of went off the path...
Of course Julie and Josh were leading as they took off across a fallen log.
Which happens to be a little bridge over a little drop off...

Some of the fallen trees were so huge.  They make us look so tiny.
I couldn't believe how big those root systems are.

It's amazing how small the forest makes you feel-it really humbles you.
These trees were there hundreds of years before you, and will be hundreds after.
We are so small.

Read about the rest of the day after the break!

After the wonder that was the founders grove we hit the road for Eureka again.
It was a bigger town, on the seaside, but still kind of podunk.
It was also a little more like in Portland, due to the amount of homeless people.

We ate dinner at a little Oyster bar.  The clam chowder was so yum!
Then we walked over to the pier to look out at the harbor.

I really love these two best friends of mine.

Then we looked out in the harbor and saw something swimming.
After much deliberation it was decided it was a harbor seal!
And there were more than one out there.

When we got back from camp we decided to go for a hike down to the river.
When we got there, we were surprised how hot it was, and people were swimming.
Since we had forgotten our suits we did the only logical thing we could think of.
We took off our clothes and swam in our underwear.
It was impulsive and so much fun!

The only downside was the old man who got naked on the beach.
You don't really come back from seeing all of that...
It's stuck in my head for a while... *shudder*

Come back for more recap and photos tomorrow!

  2. Aw, I love seeing pics of my old haunts! Yeah, Eureka is a bit podunk...I prefer Arcata, for a variety of reasons, even with it being so tiny. :)

Looks like you had a great time....and thanks for not feeding the wildlife!

  4. Those trees are SO amazing. One day hubby and I will take the kids on a West Coast road trip and we'll have to see the Redwoods.
