MM: Love Interruption

This week's song:

Love Interruption
by Jack White

I want love to roll me over slowly
Stick a knife inside me and twist it all around
I want love to grab my fingers gently
Slam them in a doorway, put my face into the ground
I want love to murder my own mother
Take her off to somewhere, like hell or up above

I want love to change my friend to enemies
Change my friend to enemies, and show me how it's all my fault.

I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me.
I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me.
Yeah I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me, anymore.

I want love to walk right up and bite me
Grab a hold of me and fight me
Leave me dying on the ground
I want love to split my mouth wide open
To cover up my ears and never let me hear a sound
I want love to forget that you offended me
Or how you had defended me when everybody tore me down

I want love to change my friend to enemies
Change my friend to enemies, and show me how it's all my fault.

I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me.
I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me.
Yeah I wont let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me, anymore.

***

I can't decide what to think of this song.  I mean it says these horrible things, but then I really like the sound and the song in general.  I keep finding myself listening to it and zoning out as I try to figure out what it means, both in general, and in relation to myself.

What do you think it means?
I'm really interested to hear everyone's interpretations.

What are you listening to this week?
Link-up! :)

  1. This is an interesting one, for sure. As I hear it, he means love the construct, so the act of love. Those are fairly graphic metaphors of abuse, BUT I can totally side with the concept that sometimes love beats the shit out of you. Honestly, it can be really hard on the heart, and controlling in a way over the rest of your life and happiness. So in that respect, I see this song about wanting love to take over and do its usual thrashing and just being totally open to that.

But it seems like there are a lot of interpretations open in there...

  2. Ok, I'll admit that this is a weakness of mine. I remember taking a class in high school and I just couldn't interpret any of it. I always thought huh? That's what it means? I won't even attempt to embarrass myself by trying, but I do like the song!

  3. Thanks for linking me up! I hadn't had a chance to yet! Goodness, I just love this song and Jack White. It's gritty, it's dirty but it's also kinda hopeful. It's amazing.

  5. Weird... Maybe the lyrics are meant in a sarcastic way, while the chorus shouts the truth: that he's not going to take that kind of abuse anymore. I don't know... that's just what I think after listening to it once. Ha, ha. :)

  8. Hmmm. I can sort of understand the sentiment behind it a little, I think. But it's very uncomfortable. I don't know how I feel about this one...

  9. I always thought the chorus was a lie, or at least extremely sarcastic in the sense that he "wants" love to do all those things to him, they aren't just happening he wants them, but then he comes back by saying even though he wants all those things he won't let love disrupt him so...I want love to fight me leave my dying, but I won't let it corrupt me, the second part is a lie he tells himself
