Gerard Butler: Best BOTW or Not?

Hey lovies! As you know, I'm still in New York, and wont be back for a few days.  SO, I have left you with some lovely guest posters.  Today, it's Cassandra from Cassagram. Her most popular feature is her Boyfriend of the Week post (click on that link to see all of them) and I've been following her for a while now.  She is such a sweetheart!

She asked me to pick which boyfriend I'd like her to revisit for my blog.
Well, Gerard Butler was one of my picks... Which resulted in some mild animosity. ;)
I urge you to comment and show her the bloggy love and your opinion! :)

♥ ♥ ♥

In December 2009 I posted my first ever Boyfriend of the Week to publish my adoration of Jimmy Fallon, because I was just so over the moon that I finally decided that I had to say something about it, but it wasn't long before I had other interests, and suddenly Boyfriend of the Week turned into an actual weekly thing on my blog. You see, by that time I was quite known amongst my friends for my flighty obsessions with male-type celebrities. They never lasted very long. I had a habit of moving on quickly to other flights of fancy. And what better way to keep track of and make use of these obsessions then to blog about them? Since then, I've written over 50 Boyfriends.

Anyway, let's get to the gist: Two Valentine's Days ago I chose Gerard Butler as my Boyfriend of the Week and no one has let me forget it since. He's the most commented on and well-remembered Boyfriend out of my entire “collection.” While I completely understand why the ladies fall over themselves for him, I don't get why he's the most popular? Why not Johnny Depp? Heath Ledger? John Mayer? It's not even nearly close to being my best-written Boyfriend.

To be honest, I picked him out of nowhere. Usually I pick Boyfriends based on an actor or character I've been obsessing over recently. But that week I had nothing, but I needed to post something… anything. It was Valentine's Day after all. There was no way I could get away with not having a Boyfriend that day - no matter if it was only in my dreams. And for some reason I chose Gerard.

So I half-assed an entry, and it turns out to be the most popular Boyfriend in the history of Boyfriend of the Week. For a while I have resented Gerard for this. It started to annoy me that he got all the attention when there were clearly more worthy (in my opinion) Boyfriends…Boyfriends I had put a lot more love, care, and attention into writing about. But when Angie picked Gerard as one of her favorites, which I had a sneaking suspicion she would, I decided I had to really think about why Gerry has completely usurped all the others.

Why Gerard Butler?

I guess, compared to all my other boyfriends, he is the most all around appealing. I tend to go for the tall, skinny, floppy haired types, and that type isn't universally attractive. I get it. He's relatively tall. He's moderately muscular (not too much, but not a bean pole). He looks rugged, like he can handle some manly type work. And finally, he's got that accent, and accents are as good as gold and diamonds to women the world over. As for his personal life, he doesn't have a lot of drama going on, as far as I know. In fact, I know almost nothing about Gerard's private life. I don't even know if he's married or dating or has children. While drama can make a celebrity more famous, it can also polarize opinions. Just look at John Mayer.

A lot of people really like him, and a lot of people also think he's a huge douche. There is no in between. As for Gerard's career, while it hasn't been substantial in terms of prestige, he's gained enough fame to be pretty well known. Not to mention he was the leading man in
probably the best chick flick of the last decade, PS I Love You, hands down. I haven't met a single woman who didn't love that movie, and it is all because Gerard's character is probably the most realistically romantic man us women folk have ever seen depicted on the screen.

Seriously. While I'm pretty sure not all Irishmen could possibly live up to standards like that, every time I watch PS I Love You I find myself wanting to run away to Ireland so I can find the man of my dreams. When I was 17 I actually went to Ireland, and I can honestly say that I wouldn't mind living there for the rest of my life. It's so incredibly beautiful. It reminds me of Vermont, except with a whole lot less trees, and instead of cows they've got sheep. But I digress…

This must be my answer. Why is Gerard number one? Universally fawned over and appreciated looks. The accent. No drama. His moderate fame. And the character he played in PS I Love You.

So, it finally makes sense to me, and I no longer resent him. In fact, I'm feeling particularly friendly…or even loving…or possibly like I need to get to Ireland (or Scotland, where Gerry is actually from) ASAP, because - dammit - I deserve a man like that! Just look at him!! What woman wouldn't want a piece of that?

  1. HA - it's funny how you rekindled your love affair with him. I can TOTALLY see the appeal. scruffy and an accent. swoon.

  2. Amen! He's definitely on my top 10 list, for all of those reasons. Except I haven't seen P.S. I Love You. Yet. :D

*sigh* Need to go to Ireland and grab a hot accented man for myself ASAP!

  5. 6'2", 200 lbs, naturally curly hair, King Leonidas (300), the Phantom of the Opera, PS I love You, Rocknrolla, has training in swords, spears, machine guns, helicopters, and has a very dramatic personal life which he keeps to himself, and avoids high profile stars. He is famous at TMZ for being the man other men should never leave their women alone with. Where have you been? LOL! Just go into Youtube, and type in Gerard Butler and find out how many music videos are dedicated to him! LOL Although he is a womanizer, he is basically a nice guy as well.

Where have you been living? LOL!

  6. Truly, you have never seen Phantom of the Opera? He was hired for his acting, rather than his singing, but he does sing in the movie. Do not compare it to the stage version, and you will enjoy it. Plus you will wonder why Christine chose the vapid aristocrat over the insane but gorgeous tunnel dweller! LOL.

  7. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I'd never actually heard of Gerard before. But, I love Irishmen, and I could so live in Ireland. And he's really cute, so I can see why everyone wants him so.

  8. I never gave him much thought, before now. Now I think I will have to find one of his movies.

  9. Dear Frankie is a lovely early indie film he made in Scotland. Another one is One More Kiss from 1999, interesting story of a man who cheats on his wife with an ex girlfriend who returns home to die of cancer. Also Scottish. Like swords and Vikings? Try Beowulf and Grendel. Just to see male beauty, see Gerard in Attila. For swoon-worthiness, The Phantom of the Opera is a must. Of course, just to see the famous ab: 300. Want to see him naked? See Law Abiding Citizen (that one is violent though).

His fans are anxiously awaiting two more coming out this year; and annoyed because the biopic of Robert Burns he promised is not even close to filming. He is in Louisiana at the moment, filming Playing the Field with Jessica Biel and Uma Thurman...is that enough for now? LOL
