Meet Nimh:

[she was nibbling on my finger nail.]
So Matt bought Nimh and her brother to feed to his snakes.
But he made the mistake of letting me play with them.
Sooooo... Guess what?
I fell in love with her AND convinced him to let me keep her.
I wasn't going to keep her brother...
(becase we know how rats breed)
BUT
He has the most amazing temperment.
He's sweet and friendly and they're so close.
And after this-how could I not keep him too?

[he was just sleeping there for a while. SO CUTE!]
His name is Basil.
The girl is a little skittish, but the boy just hops on up when you reach for him.
They make me giggle every time.
Next step, get him fixed so they don't breed.
I'm going to have a crazy pet house...
Also, Matt is never allowed to let me play with the feeder rats again.
Ever. It's a bad idea.

Those things scare me. For reals.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm glad you saved em from the snake. EW!
I love rats! I used to own several.
ReplyDeleteCan rats BE spayed and neutered?
Instead of getting them fixed, just give any babies they have to the snakes, or to a local pet store for snake fodder (is that cruel?).
Love the names, too. They look like Norwegian rats to me, which means they'll also be very intelligent. Their life span is 3-5 years, but I've found them to be amazing pets. :)
Enjoy!
They are very cute, and I'm glad they didn't go to the snake, even though I know the snake needs to eat, too.
ReplyDeleteaww...im not a rodent fan but they are really cute :)

My ex-husband has a pet snake, and while we were married it was sometimes my job to pick up the feeder rats from the pet store. Over time we ended up with 4 pet rats! After the 5th, I was no longer asked to pick up the feeder rats. LOL {I LOVE rats!} I don't have any left after all these years, but rats are great pets believe it or not! :) {Tons better than snakes IMO.}
ReplyDeleteawwww. they are so cute. can you "fix" rats?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE RATS!!! I love meeting other people who love rats because most girls don't. We had 2 beautiful, great tempered rats, but they died of old age, at 2 yrs old =[ Oh and I don't think they can fix them, either.... we had 2 girls, so I'm not 100% but when one of ours started bleeding from "down there" they said they only thing they could do would be to fix her but that it wasn't possible. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteXoXo
Rats are awesome (though, be careful because they will chew holes in fabric faster than you can catch them). My brother's had rats on and off since he was a kid. At one point he had two males and a female with hopes of mating them-but they never did.
ReplyDeleteWe buy our rodents dead and frozen so we can avoid this. But I do hear they make great pets. I didn't know you could get them fixed though. Then again, if you don't, you wouldn't have to buy feeder rats as often...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you are doing this. If your snake needs a BIG meal, bring it to Chicago. I'd happily let it police my back yard, where it will no doubt, get it's fill of some rats far more deserving to be lunch than these two cuties! xoxo
